Being a Fit Pro is like being thrown into the ocean and teaching yourself how to swim. You may learn a few things through your certification, and maybe you’re lucky enough to have a mentor, but many Fit Pros won’t get their real education until they jump into the trenches.

If you’ve been around as long as I have, it’s likely that you have picked up some skills you never expected to. Throughout your experience you have been formed into someone like Liam Neeson from Taken – you can say that you have a “particular set of skills”.

So what is that “particular set of skills”? Here are 5 skills you’ll pick up by being a Fit Pro:

  1. The gift of gab. Whether you’re an introvert or an extrovert, that no longer matters if you’re a Fit Pro. You work with people one-on-one for 30 minutes to an hour, and you’re forced to learn how to keep your client’s attention. Any great Fit Pro is able to hold a conversation with just about anyone (even if it’s just in-between sets). I’ve seen introverts become the life of the party during their sessions, although outside of the gym they’re most likely at home decompressing from a week of “dealing with people”.
  2. Multi-tasking. Yeah, yeah – multi-tasking is a myth, I know. All you’re really doing is switching from one task to another. But when you’re working with clients, especially in person, you have to be great at task switching because you have a ton of things going on at once. From other gym members on the floor, to setting up equipment, to teaching and checking form, and motivating — you have to be able to do multiple things efficiently and prioritize what is most important at each moment. Multi-tasking gets even more intense when you train groups. And don’t forget the coordination skills involved in managing a full client load outside of sessions. Being a Fit Pro will force you to become a great “multi-tasker”.
  3. A mathematician. Let’s face it, if you’re a Fit Pro you probably weren’t the most passionate about algebra or calculus in school. But I bet you can tell how many reps Bob is on and how much weight he is benching with one click glance. From calculating macros, to setting up your client’s weights for an exercise, you’ll become the Stephen Hawking of math, as long as that math is in the form of dumbbells and weight plates.
  4. A therapist. Let’s keep it real since we’re all Fit Pros here. Clients get started to change their bodies, but they end up staying so you can change their mind. Every client has some sort of emotional baggage they need to unload, and why pay a psychotherapist when they have you? You may not have a Ph.D., but you’ll end up becoming your client’s Dr. Phil, whether you like it or not.
  5. A human lie detector. When you choose a life of providing a service that most people dread, you’re going to get lied to…A LOT. You’ll hear every excuse under the sun as to why someone isn’t doing something, or can’t or won’t …blah, blah, blah. You’ll also learn to pick up on when people are telling you the truth, and you’ll see it by the actions they take. I can honestly say that I know whether someone is being honest with me at any given moment because of the skills I’ve developed through my experience as a Fit Pro. It’s a bitter skill to have, but once you’re woke, you’re woke.
