Being a Fit Pro can feel a lot like being a sergeant in a war. You’re constantly being thrown curveballs, whether it’s from your leads or your clients, and all you’re trying to do is lead people to win at the end of the day. When you’ve been in the thick of it long enough you end up with the fitness industry’s very own version of PTSD from the battle against obesity and living an average life.
Some of those experiences are harder to shake than others, and ultimately some of them end up making us who we are as Fit Pros, for both the good and the bad.
There are 3 things I can’t help but do after training fitness clients for over a decade:
- We know exactly how many calories are in every food. Once you’re woke when it comes to what you’re putting in your body, you can’t be unwoke. It’s like being Keanu Reeves in the Matrix once he realizes that he is the one. While most people look at a burger and see a delicious hunk of meat. A Fit Pro sees lines of code and those lines are code are the calories and the macros of those calories. It can take the fun out of eating the “fun” foods in life, but only if you aren’t doing the work to earn it. Then it makes it far sweeter to enjoy those cheat meals, knowing what you know.
- You become a semi-pro speed eater. When you lift weights 5x a week and are constantly having to squeeze your meals in-between clients, two few things happen: You’re constantly starving! With your high metabolism, you need to learn how to eat fast if you’re going to stay nourished so you can give your best to clients. Until this day, I still eat my meals like I’m on the clock and have to be constantly reminded that it’s ok to actually chew my food. When you live on someone else’s schedule for years, you can forget what it’s like to live life on your own schedule.
- You see everyone’s muscle imbalances all the time. If there was any reference that’s appropriate, it would be the little boy in the Sixth Sense who saw dead people. But instead of dead people, you see every single muscle imbalance people have. From rounded shoulders, forward-tilted hips, to even externally rotated feet. It’ll be so bad that you might even feel the joint pain yourself with some people you see. Once again, when it comes to poor posture and muscle imbalances, once when you’re woke, you can’t be unwoke.
There are worse things that can happen to you after years of dedicating your life to changing lives through fitness. Nonetheless, you’ll get battle scars and habits that are hard to break.
It wasn’t until I was able to learn how to better leverage my time, skill sets, and my end goal that I was able to escape the day to day grind.
